Self-Righteously Wrong ... I Think!

People are upset about everything!   Literally everything!   On top of that, everyone is right about everything too!   It’s all about my agenda, my contextual understanding, my time-table, my feelings, my way of fixing it, my interpretation, my my my my my everything!   So, there, I said it, so go ahead and get mad, send me a “nasty-gram” or whatever, cause I’m ready to fight!

In the world today, culture has evolved to be somewhat arrogantly self-centered.   But this situation in the culture today begs to have some important questions answered, such as:
If I believe that Black Lives Matter, what about other lives and nationalities?

If “all lives” matter regardless, how can we justify abortion?

If my ancestors participated in oppressing other races simply to benefit themselves, how am I the one that’s responsible?

If we are faced with all of these social issues today, haven’t we learned anything from the past?

If we need to “Defund” a public service group, why not all of them?

If we remove funding from one group, presumably because they are oppressive, who is wise enough to make that call and make sure that it has a positive effect in our communities?

And in the church, if we are going to change the meaning of Scripture, who is it that is wise enough to make the decisions of what stays and what goes?

And, are they ready to stand before God and give an account?

OK, so by now you are really mad!   Yes, we all have opinions, based on our own understandings and experiences, but how has humanity handled our issues so far?   If the world today is any indication, it appears that we are regressing into an abyss of immorality.    I know that is not a very popular statement, at all, however, it seems like we are going from bad to worse.

When I read Scripture, I see time after time a cycle of blessing to trials to repentance to restoration to blessings again!   Why is this so hard to apply to our lives?   It’s obvious, if we live according to God’s Law, honor Him and try our best we will receive tremendous blessings!   But as a human being, one with my own free will, understanding and life to live, I really don’t want anyone telling me what to do!   “I got this!”

NOTE TO SELF: You may think you do, but how’s it going so far?

Trouble Brewing

I know I’m going to get in trouble here, but I am sincerely searching for answers to some extremely deep and hurtful questions.   For example, I wasn’t even on the planet when slavery existed in the USA.   So, how am I responsible?   I understand that racism has been imbedded into the culture, but honestly, making new laws to combat racism seems kinda lame.   I know, I know, right now you’re probably ready to cuss me out, but really, adding or changing laws hasn’t worked for centuries.   People have always protested civil inequities and lawmakers have always tried to combat the evils of racism though laws and policy.

What about poverty?   Dang, the problem with people around the globe starving has been here since day one.   Just look at the news today and it seems more and more prevalent.   Food insecurity has become a real issue here in the United States, the land of opportunity, the home of the free and so on.   The average American throws away more food each year than most individuals in poor countries survive on during that same year!   So, the government offers programs, food stamps and education to combat the problem.   But the problem is still here.   I wonder why we also have the highest obesity rate in the world?

Let’s talk about relationships.   We also have the highest divorce rate in the world!   Why, is it because we just can’t get along with each other?   Maybe it has something to do with pet ownership.   The USA leads the world in its fascination with pets.   You got it; we’re number one!

So, what seems to be the answer?   After all, this has been going on since the founding fathers set foot on this soil.   There has been conflict, oppression, slavery, hatred, suffering, inequities and all of the evils we are still faced with today.   What if I told you that it could be repaired, and repaired permanently?   You would probably think I’m crazy or some kind of wacko.   But really, the answer is right in front of us.

The answer I’m referring to is God.   OK, I know, you don’t believe in God, right?   Unfortunately for some, even the best minds in the world have come to the common agreement that all of this, life and the universe, could not have happened on its own, or by accident.   Take my watch for example, complex, finished, working etc.   If I told you that it had been formed exactly like it is, ticking away and without a scratch, by a “big bang” of some sort you would probably have me committed for psychiatric evaluation.   But the wrist that my watch is on, that is thousands of times more complex, you would have me believe that it was formed and developed over time, sort of came crawling out of the ooze.   It makes no sense.

The problem that has faced us for centuries is simple: we do not want to be subject to any kind of a God or deity.   We don’t want to be told what to do!   Like in the story of Adam and Eve, they chose to put the will of God under their own human free will.   They wanted to make their own choices!   Unfortunately, you see how that turned out …

NOTE TO SELF: You can’t explain life without God.
Question: Has humankind ever created anything out of nothing?

What Are You Thinking?

Just the other day I read an article about a United Methodist Church allowing the Islamic Center of Nashville to use their facility for Friday prayers during the month of Ramadan.   The need for a substitute place of prayer was the result of a remodeling project at their center of worship.   This situation brings up questions on both sides of the issue.   Is it right to allow other faith traditions the opportunity to use United Methodist properties to support worship of other gods?

The first question that arises is this: “Are we dishonoring God by allowing what we would consider a false faith to use a facility that has been built and dedicated to our Christian God?   Sure, we’re supposed to help others, offer our best to those in need, but are we helping to solidify a “false” or “incomplete” faith that does not believe that Jesus is the way, the only way?

When we look at the Scriptures regarding belief systems outside of Christianity, we are instructed to not become involved with them, and to basically stay away!

John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Galatians 1:6-10 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel — not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ.  But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed.  As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed.  For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.

1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,

And the list goes on and on.   There are many places in the Bible that focus on the problem of being influenced by other faith traditions, especially to the point that our Christian faith starts to become watered-down.   Without any doubt, Jesus states that He is God, is One with the Father, and salvation only comes through that belief, trust, repentance and obedience.
